ASP Girls vs. Boys

a.) The reason why we chose to conduct research into the male and female ratio at ASP and in high school in general is because we thought it would be interesting. We are participating in the program and wished to find out more about it from a data point of view. Also we wanted to see if this data proved or disproved any theories as to if girls are better than boys in school. We feel that this data would reveal more about the Advanced Studies Programs and the school system in general.

b.) We found a list of males and females who applied, were admitted, and attended the ASP program from 2010 to 2016. We also found a list of the schools that sent the most kids to ASP that year, also from 2010 to 2016. We know that this information is accurate because we got it from Joyce, one of the administrators at ASP.

c.)

d.) Our plan in the future is to compare the different ratios of applied to accepted by gender to see if that reveals anything about the performance of girls and boys in school. We will also try to collect data on the school system in general to see if we can determine anything about students' performance that way.

  1. I found the graphs with applicants and acceptances a little difficult to visualize. When I read through the graphs, I understood them, but with the red and blue lines layered on top of each other it almost looks like that is the total number of people, rather than separated out.

  2. I know this is kinda out there but how does this data relate to the college application, acceptance, and attendance rates? Are they about the same gender wise or are there different conclusions to be made between the 2?

  3. one question I have is that has this trend of more girls than boys has always been the case? If not, when were there more boys than girls applying to ASP?

  4. Are there more girls in general in New Hampshire schools? The total population of each gender may help or hinder the number that apply, are admitted, and attend ASP.

  5. When I was looking at your graphs, I found them a little hard to read. After a few minutes of thinking I finally understood. However the graphs look very similar and I am still a little confused on how they are different. This is is an interesting topic and I am excited to see where you go with it.

  6. Why are applications going down in general? That seems weird to me! Are you trying to figure out if ASP reflects the state as a whole? I wonder if there is evidence of gender discrimination in the application process?

  7. I also found the graphs difficult to compare the numbers of each genders without them side-by-side or otherwise separated with clear relative values. Additionally, I found this type of graph somewhat confusing as the numbers of each gender attending, applying, and being admitted only occurs once per year as opposed to it changing throughout the year as is implied by the graph.

  8. If you're trying to make conclusions about male vs. female academic performance, it may be worthwhile to also look into who was invited by ASP. Many boys from my school who are very capable were invited to apply but chose not to. Are boys less likely to apply than girls?

  9. I wonder why the graph of acceptance is gradually going down. It seems the program gets smaller and smaller each year. Is this something that the directors are doing on purpose or that they are not finding as many quality applicants?

  11. It looks like female attendance is decreasing and male attendance is increasing in the last year. I wonder if there is a reason for this or if it's coincidence?

  12. I find the visuals a little hard to read at first with the colors over lapping. I find it interesting how much the females differ from the males in every category. Why is there such a big difference?
